Historic Austin, NV

One of our oldest Fallon neighbors is the town of Austin, Nevada. Located 110 miles from Fallon and 1 hr. and 30 min. drive. It is a living ghost town with many historical buildings lining Main Street and the surrounding town. It is located in Lander County and has a current population of 340. It is situated on the western slopes of Toiyabe Range with an elevation of 6, 605 FT. on Highway 50 (The Loneliest Road in America).

The town was named after the city of Austin, Texas and was founded in 1862. It’s believed that a pony express horse dislodged a local rock which contained silver ore and a mining boom began. At one time the town and surrounding area had 10,000 residents due to the mining of silver ore. The silver rush started in 1863 and ended in 1887. During that time many buildings were constructed which included churches, schools, businesses, community buildings and housing.

The Stokes Castle was built in 1897 and is a three story stone structure which still stands today. The castle was built by Anson Phelps Stokes a mine developer and railroad magnate who was a driving force behind local mining and the Nevada Central Railroad built in 1880. He built the castle for his sons and was only used briefly in the summer of 1897 and it has remained mostly unlived in.

The International Hotel on Main Street is still in use today serving meals and libations. It was first built in Virginia City and was replaced by a larger hotel. Parts of it were dismantled and brought to Austin where it sits today. This hotel is thought to be the oldest in Nevada.

Many old buildings are located in the area with beautiful churches built in the 1860’s and 1870’s. If you really want to see a “real living ghost town” that isn’t so commercialized than you should drive to Austin and see it for yourself. It is a living history lesson. The town also has a museum located on Main Street.
The town now relies on cattle and sheep ranching and tourism. Stop by and see Stokes Castle, the Austin Community Park, Lander County Courthouse, and many of the old buildings and churches. Austin offers a diverse recreational area which offers hunting, fishing, camping, biking, backpacking, and photography.

Events include: Austin Roping Event, Lady Caroline Lofits Disrobing and High Tea, Lions Club Fly-In, and the Oat Bran Bike Tour.
