Eureka County School District

Historic Eureka, Nevada

Not many places in Nevada can brag about the diversity of their natural, historic, and economic characteristics like Eureka can. Eureka’s natural resources and economic activities are supported by the diverse physiography from the majestic alpine mountain peaks to the irrigated valley floors.

The values of Eureka include the clean mountain air, wide open spaces and recreation, fishing, wildlife, quiet surroundings, views and beautiful scenery, and just overall enjoyment of nature!

Eureka was founded in 1865 due to the discovery of an ore deposit in the area and became the county seat in 1873. It is 180 miles east of Fallon, it is located on U.S. Highway 50, “The Loneliest Road in America”. Located in central Nevada, Eureka County is comprised of three towns: Eureka, Beowave, and the Crescent Valley. Eureka’s elevation is 6,500 ft and its population is approximately 1900 people.

The town of Eureka includes the Eureka Opera House, The Sentinel Museum, churches, and the many organizations including the Eureka Lion’s Club, Girl Scouts of America, Eureka 4-H, and Future Farmers of America. The Opera House was built in 1880 and was just recently restored. It offers an experience for meeting and convention goers. The Sentinel Museum is in the 1879 Eureka Sentinel Newspaper Building. It was the Newspaper Office and residence from 1879 to 1960. The ground floor was made into the museum in 1982 and in June of 2000 the museum was expanded to both floors.”

Special Events include many special quality musicians in the Eureka Opera House, Perdiz Sport Shooting, and the Fiddlers Jamboree at the Eureka Fairgrounds.
