Historic Hawthorne, Nevada Hawthorne is 72 miles south of Fallon, located in Mineral County. Hawthorne was made a town in 1880 by a man named H.M. Yerington. He was the president of the Carson and Colorado Railroad Company. He wanted the town to be a division and distribution point for the newly made railroad. It was named after a lumberman friend from Carson City. On April 14, 1881, the first train arrived in town, which was full of buyers for the new town. The Hawthorne Army Depot is in Mineral County and takes up approximately 150,000 acres of land that surrounds Hawthorne. This military industrial installation is owned by the government and is contractor-operated. It was established after the explosion that destroyed an ammuntion plant in New Jersey in 1926. Hundreds of people were injured in nearby towns. It was recommended that a depot should be made in a remote area within 1,000 miles of the west coast to serve the Pacific area, thus landing it in good ole’ remote Nevada! Hawthorne is the main town for travelers of the desert and also for vacation, sporting, and recreational activities in Walker Lake, just a couple of miles north of the town. It is at an elevation of 4255 feet and is surrounded by mountain ranges which protect it from the Pacific storms. To the west you can view the beautiful 11, 239 ft Mt. Grant of the Wassuk Range. Sites to see in Hawthorne include the Mineral County Museum, Hawthorne Ordinance Museum, Veteran’s Memorial Park, Old Rawhide Jail, Memorial Rose Garden, Hawthorne’s Original One-Room Schoolhouse and the Walker Lake Golf Course. Special Events include the Walker Lake Fishing Derby, Walker Lake Loon Festival, Armed Forces Day Celebration, Mineral County Fair, and the Walker Lake Paiute Tribe Pine nut Festival and Rodeo. |
