Historic Silver Springs, Nevada Silver Springs AKA Jackrabbit Junction is located in Lyon County 30 miles west of Fallon. It celebrated its fifty year anniversary in 2000. The land was purchased by a Mr. Peek in 1950 and is where the township now stands. It is surrounded by Carson River on the south end, Lake Lahontan from the east with the Dead Camel Mountains in the background, the Virginia-Ramsey range to the north, and an elevation of 4,200 ft. Many people visit the area and spend time at Lake Lahontan. It is a reservoir which includes a dam. The reservoir and dam are part of the Newlands Project, which was one of the first irrigation projects at the start of the Reclamation Act of June 17, 1902. It was the first Governmental project to send water downstream for irrigation. It stores and diverts water from the Truckee and Carson River to irrigate lands near Fallon and to make hydroelectric power. The dam was completed in 1915 and is 162 feet high, 1,700 feet long at the top, and contains 733 cubic yards of earth fill. The reservoir can hold up to 274,000 acre-feet, when it is full. It was named after the Ancient Lake Lahontan which covered much of the Great Basin during the last Ice Age. The reservoir became a Nevada State Recreation Area on July 1, 1971. Before that, it was run together by both Churchill and Lyon Counties. Another important landmark is the famous Fort Churchill. The story goes that on May 10, 1860, a group of miners and adventurers joined together outside the station to plan a strategy before going off to war against the Paiute Indians. The wanted revenge because the Indians had killed the two Williams Brothers three days before at a trading post up the road. When they went to war, 76 out of the 105 men had died. The Indians stood behind bushes and threw rocks one by one. Fort Churchill was an Army post for 9 years to protect the settlement. The main job of the soldiers was to be sure that the Comstock Lode miners stood for the Union cause in the Civil war. Some important events not to miss in Silver Springs would be the Christmas Luminaria, along with Founder’s Day and Halloween. There are also other events to take part in. There is the Fiber Arts and Quilt Show sponsored by the Silver Springs Entertainment and Arts (SSEA). You can enjoy entertainment and recreational activities here. This includes boating, snow skiing, camping, hunting, fishing, swimming, many sports, and many community projects year round. |
