Historic Yerington, Nevada

Yerington is located 59 miles southwest of Fallon. It is located in a fertile valley that produces alfalfa, onions, garlic, grains, and potatoes. Many dairy farms, cattle and sheep ranches are found throughout the valley.

The town was first named Pizen Switch and the story goes that an establishment sold inferior liquor which tasted like poison. The name then changed to Greenfield for the lush green valley. The citizens of Greenfield wanted a railway to come into the valley and sought to woo a railroad superintendent named H.M. Yerington. They changed Greenfield to Yerington, but the flattery didn’t end up bringing a railroad to the area.
Yerington was incorporated in 1907 and has a city population of 3,710 with Mason Valley having a population of approximately 12,000. The city has a rich mining history with gold and copper. The Anaconda Pit is still visible and was a very large copper mine in its day.

Yerington has a lot of charm with its downtown still maintaining historic buildings. It has many modern amenities with a golf course, airport, bowling alley, casinos, restaurants, and three city parks. Three lakes are in easy driving distance with Lahontan, Walker, and Topaz.

Other places to visit are Wilson Canyon, Mason Valley Wildlife Management Area and Fishery, Anaconda Pit, and Trap Shooting-Pistol and Rifle Range.
Events Include: Yerington High School Rodeo, Onion Festival, A Night in the Country, Lyon County Fair and Rodeo, and their 4th of July Rodeo.
